The Objectives of the School

SIER, based in the Friuli Venezia Giulia (FVG) Region, offers annual (outreach and educational) courses dedicated to introducing the main topics in the field of renewable energy science and its applications. The school is primarily aimed at undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in approaching this subject. It is designed especially for those who are new to the field of renewable energy: through a blend of classroom training and hands-on exercises with instructors, participants will gain a comprehensive overview of the main commercially viable renewable technologies, learning how they work and how the systems are designed, with the goal of fostering an entrepreneurial mindset in this sector.

The school – which lasts five days – aims to introduce participants to the many aspects of renewable energy by providing a structured overview of the various renewable energy sources, how they can be harnessed and used to produce energy in the form of electricity, heating, and cooling. Students will have the opportunity to explore and discuss the technologies and their implications with industry experts operating in the region, gaining insights into their economic potential – both in urban and rural settings. In addition, the program will present study and training opportunities available in the FVG Region to acquire the skills and professional qualifications needed to work in the renewable energy sector.

At the end of the five days, participants will be able to assess the suitability of different technologies for various situations. The course will also provide an overview of renewable energy markets (with particular attention to local ones) and the latest market trends. Special attention will be given to guiding students toward other specialized courses, schools, and master’s programs on the topic available in the Region, as well as to encouraging engagement with local industries — especially with regard to the possibility of undertaking internships (both curricular and non-curricular) after completing the course, preferably with the sponsoring companies.
