- Introduction: Energy policy, energy security, and renewable energy. The role of the international community in sustainable development. The EU’s energy policy.
- Renewable energy: Overview of the range of commercially viable technologies.
- Photovoltaic Solar Energy: Applications of photovoltaic solar systems, off-grid and on-grid systems, components of a photovoltaic system, system design and sizing, project evaluation, planning, implementation, and energy yield, economic assessment of photovoltaic solar systems.
- Solar Thermal for Heating: Solar thermal for water heating: linear mirrors, flat plate collectors, evacuated tube collectors, storage tanks, and other components. System design and sizing.
- Wind Energy: Principles of wind energy, fundamentals of a wind power plant, types of wind turbines (large/small, grid-connected/stand-alone), power curve, energy yield calculation, overview of planning software, development of the wind energy market.
- Bioenergy: Sustainability of bioenergy, biogas production technologies, areas of application, biogas potential of different substrates, biogas and digestate utilization, market development, biomass combustion, pyrolysis and gasification of biomass, overview of biofuels.
- Hydropower: Principles of hydropower, various types of hydropower systems, site evaluation and system sizing.
- Geothermal Energy: Geothermal systems, geothermal exploration techniques, direct and indirect use of geothermal energy, geothermal power plants, heat pumps.
- Integration of Renewable Energy Sources into the Grid: How electricity networks work, the impact of renewable electricity generation on power grids, frequency control, voltage control.
- Field Trip: Visit to local renewable energy systems.
